His papers are brilliant in that he defines absolute Truth, relates it to human consciousness, and explains how to heal and redeem the mind through divine metaphysics. Throughout each paper he goes from one subject to another, bringing to light different forms of mortal mind to be handled, and how to do so.

His Association Addresses and London Letters cover a multitude of subjects including malpractice, life and death, how to view the body in Christian Science, how to give a treatment, the Church and its functions, handling sickness and disease, coming out from under old theology, and many more.

In his 1918 Association Address, he writes:

“There is no matter at all; and one must not be afraid to say there is no matter, either for oneself or for someone else; one must not be afraid to say daily: ‘There is no matter,’ nor be afraid to know that one does not have a material body; one should not be timid about knowing that one is absolutely spiritual. One must say it and know it, as nothing so improves the material body, so-called, as to know that one does not have a material body.”

In his Association Addresses, he writes:

“Everybody is a genius in the sight of God and there is no other sight. Every person is a genius because he has one infinite Mind, and he knows as his individuality the grandeur of the infinite Mind. Do not doubt this, but let the spontaneous spark of genius show in your thinking. Do not let anything persuade you that there is anything you cannot know.” (1927)

“Every difficulty, every so-called disease, every erroneous condition that confronts the human being, is invariably a belief. It never is contained in matter. It never is a disease on or in the body. It never is in difficulties in what is called business. IT IS ALWAYS BELIEF.” (1929)

“An infinite Science must be forever unfolding. Therefore our understanding of it must be forever unfolding also. There is no future experience, however remote or ideal, that will constitute the acme or end of that understanding.” (1930)

In The Unfolding Idea, Mr. Young explains how healing is not the overcoming of mesmeric beliefs, but a thinning out of the mist of mortal mind so that the ever present truth can unfold more clearly. This is the process wherein ultimately we realize such a spiritual state of mind that we know no evil, matter, or mortality. This concept developed in a clear and concise way opens up new insights into how Christian Science brings about healing and regeneration. He writes: “Divine Mind unfolds itself as our understanding of its infinite ideas appearing progressively as improved beliefs or concepts, which we call healing or demonstrations; but the improved belief or concept — the better “sense” world — is not the demonstration. The demonstration is Mind’s proof of its presence in our understanding of its ideas, and thus the disappearance of mortal mind with its disease.”

A collection of articles focused on age: Life without Years; Life’s Eternal Abundance; “If Thine Eye Be Single”; God Is with Us Here and Hereafter; Our Father’s Demand — Unself Mortality; Accidents, False Phenomena; Perception; The Remedy for Pains from “Peeves”; Right When — Right Then; Ruling the Unruly Member; Seeing and Hearing Permanent as Being; Some Thoughts about Hair; Timeless Being. In the article, “If Thine Eye Be Single” he writes: “Mortals believe that sight and hearing are personal possessions, that each mortal has these faculties embodied in his corporeality, and that time, accident, or other material beliefs can impair them. Christian Science takes exactly the opposite view. It points to the healings by Christ Jesus of those who were born blind and deaf as evidence that God never impairs, but rather perpetuates the faculties of man. Matter testified in Jesus’ time, ‘Here is a mortal who was born blind; he will never see.’ But a moment later he saw. The Master’s understanding that man and his faculties are spiritual, God-constituted and immutable, dissipated the godless material condition, and the patient saw. The conditions of negative matter yielded to the mandate of positive Mind. Jesus understood that man’s ability to perceive can be neither bestowed nor destroyed by unintelligent matter. . . . “To overcome impaired sight or hearing, we study to become more fully conscious of the present spiritual perfection of man, of his seeing and his hearing as the work of the one Ego. So-called material sight must be seen as not the true sight. We must begin to see the things that are spiritual and eternal as a prerequisite to seeing more normally the things that are temporal. “As in the Master’s time, so now it is required of us that our eye be single, that our sensibility be that of the one God — His sight and His hearing inevitably expressed in His ever-seeing, ever-hearing man, on whose faculties material supposition can work no alteration or impairment because they evidence the eternal activity of God.”

In his introduction to this compilation, Gilbert Carpenter says of Fragments: “This present book is not a work for scholastic study. It is a treasure trove, a collection of gems of spiritual thoughts.” These gems include items attributed to Mrs. Eddy — articles, sermons, letters, interviews, and notes she made on various subjects. This book sheds light on the deeper teachings of Christian Science. So often a single sentence by Mrs. Eddy illumines consciousness with new insight into Christian Science. In this collection, we have this paragraph: “The most precious of all possessions is power over ourselves, power to withstand evil, to bear trials, to confront danger, power over pleasure and pain, power to follow our convictions however resisted they are by menace and scorn, the power of calm reliance in scenes of darkness and revenge. No truth is more certain than this, that man is the arbiter of his own fate. The mutations of time, the periods of leaf and flower, enormous cycles of geological and astronomical change, are the motions of continual Mind photographed, the formations and development of an exhaustless mental energy. Even the forms of decay are but marks of regeneration, the secret alembics of Life. There is something in the universe besides material forms; for they are moved by a power external to themselves, and the substance upon which they are based is greater than they. As to the Truth and power of this intelligence that acts above and beyond the forms of sense, we cannot doubt. We are connected with a higher order of realities than those we see around us. . . .” As we read these thoughts from the pen of Mrs. Eddy, one is impressed at the broad scope of her ability to relate Christian Science to the entire human scene, and to make its healing power relevant to problems common to us all.

1953 Topics:
SHEPHERDING OUR THOUGHTS
and
AS A MAN THINKETH

from HUMAN AND DIVINE COINCIDENCE:
“Man is spiritual, immortal consciousness, the divine idea of God. No evil is present in real being. Man is unlimited in intelligence and ability. He reflects the wisdom and understanding of eternal Mind, and the range of his thought is infinite.

From the beginning of time, that is as far back as human history records, men and women have reached out mentally to grasp these facts. They have striven, often falteringly, to enlarge their perception and understanding of man and the universe. They have sought to utilize existing potentialities coming within range of their comprehension and so to better their conditions.

Without knowing it or analyzing it, they have been reaching out for the truth of their own being, ‒ the Christ, the divine idea of God, ‒ that they might apply it to the human. This effort of the human race to rise above the physical, cultural, and spiritual levels on which they have progressively found themselves, has led on the ages.”

from SPIRITUAL SONSHIP:
“Jesus knew and demonstrated the love with which divine Principle embraces and blesses humanity. He said, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) No more precious gift could the Father bestow upon mankind than a knowledge of His only begotten Son, for this Son is the true selfhood of everyone, embodying and making manifest to human consciousness the permanency, perfection, beauty, and holiness of man as he really is. This son, conscious of the Father’s goodness, brings the assurance of Immanuel, God’s power and presence with us now, and is our Messiah, our Saviour from all human woes.

Spiritual sonship is complete. It is compound idea, in which no quality of God is missing. Spiritual sonship is, in reality, the only sonship. There is not two of any of us. We do not have a material and a spiritual selfhood which war against each other. We have only one selfhood, and that divine sonship. ”

Association Address – 1953
SHEPHERDING OUR THOUGHTS
and
AS A MAN THINKETH

from SHEPHERDING OUR THOUGHTS:
“Faith in a power invisible to and higher than material sense – a good power guiding and directing human affairs – has brought comfort and courage to many people, and has often been symbolized in the idea of the good shepherd. The ancient Hebrews, tenders of flocks and herds, frequently used the illustrations of the shepherd in their writings. Jesus used it, and in this present day our Leader has brought the thought of the good shepherd very close to each heart, revealing it as the Christliness present in every human consciousness, ready and able to guide into unlimited good all those who follow its wise and pure leading.”

from AS A MAN THINKETH:
“Our Leader writes (S&H pref. vii:13), “The time for thinkers has come.” This call is not a call to mere intellectualism. It is a call to spiritual awakening, because spiritual thinking is the only thinking which, in the final analysis, stands as real thought.

The Christian Science church is a thinking organization, and the degree of excellence of the thinking therein determines the effectiveness of the Movement in its healing and saving capacity. The ministry of Christian Science is a thinking ministry. Healing in Christian Science is a spiritually mental process.

Christian Science mentalizes everything. It rises above physics into metaphysics. It lifts thought into a spiritual perspective which discerns the erroneously mental nature of evil, and perceives the divinely mental nature of good. It uncovers matter as a mortal, mental concept without substance, and declares real substance to consist of divine ideas emanating from divine Mind.”

In his 1961 address under “The Five Phases of Prayer”, Mr. Rieke says:

“When we pray the prayer of petition we need to rejoice that God, the all-hearing Mind, hears our prayer, and He answers our prayer from His storehouse of spiritual abundance. Our Master said: “Believe that ye receive what ye ask for in prayer.” When petitioning God, we must make sure we do not do too much talking. That’s not polite. We must silently listen for God’s answer, with absolute confidence that the right answer is always there. It is often well to begin our prayer with a sincere expression of the desires of our hearts.”

In his 1962 address under “Infinitesimals”, Mr. Rieke says:

“Because we are thinking rightly about the infinitesimals, the atoms, the molecules, the thought of the world is beginning to change and to see the truth about the basic reality of all phenomena. This year I had the opportunity to read three papers written by Donald Hatch Andrews, professor of chemistry at John Hopkins University. I would like to share a few of his observations. He says, ‘Today there is a new element of hope with us, because this same science which has given us atomic power, has also given us atomic vision. Through the microscope, the spectroscope, and the telescope, we are getting an entirely new view of the basic realities of which both the universe and we ourselves are made. And we are making the startling discovery that, in a word, the basic reality of our universe is not matter but music.'”

In his 1963 address under “The Depths of Being”, Mr. Rieke says:

Do you go over your lesson every day? Someone once said, “Yes, she goes right over her lesson like an airplane flying high over the earth.”

Do you go through your lesson every day? The comment was made, “Yes, he goes through it — like a lead bullet.” I would rather have you read just one section a day and dig deep — be a thorough researcher — than to have you scratch the surface six times a week.

The poet Pope once wrote, “Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring.” Don’t be a shallow Christian Scientist; be thorough in your study and application. In our whole movement there is a great need for thoroughness, research in depth.

By giving us the seven synonymous terms for God, Life, Truth, Love, Spirit, Soul, Principle and Mind, our Leader has truly defined the depths of the Supreme Being, the profundity of existence. Let us consider each of these synonymous terms this morning, and dig a little deeper to find the true God.
