BY ANN BEALS—– In Christian Science, evil is shown to be hypnotic illusion, a belief in a power apart from God, good. It is a specific term used to define evil in its many forms. The study of Christian Science uncovers, analyzes, and destroys evil. All mesmeric control can be overcome through an understanding of God. This booklet explains what evil is, how it operates, and how to handle it through the prayer of affirmation and denial. It also shows why we must handle evil in order to overcome it. The essence of this booklet is summed up in the following paragraph: “The realization of truth destroys the fear of evil. This loss of fear enables the metaphysician to argue with total conviction against the seeming reality of animal magnetism. When fear is overcome and we can stand absolutely unintimidated by any of evil’s suggestions, we can no longer be influenced by it. It is the destruction of the fear of evil that enables us to handle it most successfully. The loss of fear usually comes gradually as we are faithful to the daily work of study and prayer.” To anyone understanding this form of prayer, evil is no longer a threat. It is an illusion to be destroyed through the prayerful work that gives one dominion over it. Thus prayer is no longer one of supplication, asking that God deliver us from evil, but one in which we exercise our God-given power over the aggressive suggestions of animal magnetism. As evil becomes more aggressive and subtle, we need this form of prayer in order to detect its aggressive hypnotic suggestions and escape its harmful influence.

When Christian Science was first given to the world, it was greatly misunderstood and attacked by pulpit and press. At that time, spiritual healings were considered miraculous events belonging to the days of early Christianity. Introduction records, “In 1875, the first edition of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, was published. This book was the initial effort of Mary Baker Eddy to put into words her discovery of the spiritual nature of man and the universe. From the very beginning this book had a strange power. It healed those who read it! Students of this book soon found that, as they understood it, they could not only heal themselves, but they could heal others. As Christian Science spread throughout the world, it left in its wake healings equal to those of early Christianity. And so spiritual healing, as practiced by the early Christians, lived again in the hearts of Christian Scientists.” Although it has been over a century since Science and Health was first published, Christian Science is still greatly misunderstood. This Introduction covers four important subjects: Christian Science as a scientific discovery, as well as a modern religion; testimonies of healing and a practical approach to spiritual healing; a brief account of the life of Mary Baker Eddy and a historical sketch of the movement; and the standard of Christian Science. If you are new to Christian Science, you will find this overall view a wonderful beginning.

Once you learn that Christian Science heals through spiritual means alone, the next question is, how does such healing take place? At the heart of the healing work is the study of Christian Science coupled with a unique form of prayer called treatment. This book defines what treatment is and how it can be used to realize healing. Such treatment is far more than a blind faith in God to heal. It is the most powerful form of intelligence known today, for it is based upon Mrs. Eddy’s discovery that God is All and evil is hypnotic illusion.

In Christian Science treatment, you learn to take the initiative and affirm, or argue for, the allness of God and the perfection of man in His likeness; then you deny, or argue against, the power and reality of evil, mortality, and matter. This is the prayer of affirmation and denial. Once you understand this prayer, you can use it to overcome every kind of discord and prove for yourself that evil is unreal. Ms. Beals writes: “This prayer enables you to demonstrate the full healing power of Christian Science. In fact, the treatment is everything! If you are seeking a reliable approach to healing, you will find it in this unique form of prayer. “As you master the treatment, your healing work is no longer uncertain. It is scientific. You understand how to heal through prayer.

To heal with such assurance, you must be thoroughly schooled in the teachings of Christian Science and in the six footsteps of treatment. Then when you apply the treatment to specific claims of discord, sickness, and limitation, your prayerful work brings healing.”  This method of praying is scientific and the blessings that flow from it are in proportion to your understanding and practice of Christian Science.

Those students who are familiar with Mrs. Eddy’s teachings on animal magnetism and malicious malpractice, know of her concern for the time when mortal mind would begin to use its latent power to control others through secret hypnosis. Although she wrote and taught prolifically on aggressive mental suggestion and mental assassination, most of her students could not visualize how threatening such mental work would become. But today, we know how discerning she was on the subject, for the threat of mind control is here, taking place in the very society in which we live. The world in general is aware of it, and some suspect there is a relationship between strange, unexplained events taking place and the mind control, or secret hypnosis, that is on the increase. But most alarming is the fact that the average mind has no way of defending itself against mental invasion and mind control. The threat of secret malicious hypnosis comes from the revival of witchcraft, Satanism, and other occult practices, from modern-day studies of hypnosis, and from the development of scientific technology that can monitor and control the minds of individuals and the masses. The one means of escape from malicious hypnotism and mind control is through prayer, especially scientific prayer as taught in Christian Science. Those who understand Christian Science can protect themselves from mind control, and counteract its harmful influence. Christian Science and the Threat of Mind Control, explains how to find refuge from malicious malpractice in the spiritual realm. It begins with a brief review of the more aggressive forms of mind control active today, including those that take place in our own daily lives. There is a description of the physical, mental, and emotional effects of an occult attack on one being victimized. It then explains how to escape such hypnotic influence through an understanding of Mrs. Eddy’s writings, and the prayer of affirmation and denial. As we turn to Christian Science to resist and overcome malicious hypnosis, we find we can demonstrate our dominion over it. Protection from the occult in Christian Science works for anyone, anywhere, any time. The malicious mental work by the occult is done secretly. It may involve only one or two depraved minds, or it may be the collective work of many. The prayerful work of the Scientist is also done secretly, quietly, alone with God. While the hypnotic work of the malpractitioner has only his own will-power behind it, the prayerful work of the Scientist has the presence, power, and intelligence of God behind it. Thus, the Scientist can annul and reverse the work of the hypnotist, and prevent its harmful influence from having any effect on him and his world.

As we progress ever deeper into a mental age, the abuse of mental power needs to be carefully considered in Christian Science. The world is increasingly aware of the power of hypnotism, subliminal suggestion, mind-control, and aggressive mental suggestion. These forms of malpractice are committed daily against the undefended mind. Christian Science provides a sure means of defending the mind from all forms of hypnosis. The general concept of malpractice is that of one person mentally attacking another — a conscious and deliberate act to harm or control him often through secret hypnosis. But there are many other subtle forms of malpractice which we encounter daily, and unless we are aware of them, we unconsciously accept into consciousness these false suggestions and suffer from them. This book includes a brief history of mesmerism to show how it is the work of depraved will-power, and how the present use of hypnosis is a growing threat to individual health and freedom. It explains many forms of malpractice, and alerts us to the many harmful effects that malpractice can have on our health and lives. But most important, it explains how Christian Science enables one to become immune to malpractice, to recognize mental attacks and successfully defend the mind against them through scientific prayer.

In these troubled times, many of us are turning to God for help. But the question is, do we find the help we need when we pray? If not, then perhaps we do not know how to pray scientifically. In this age of science and technology, very little is said about the scientific Principle of prayer — prayer based on an understanding of God, rather than blind faith. If spiritual healing is to be reliable, we must learn to pray intelligently. This booklet outlines how to do this. Included are the three laws basic to spiritual healing. “First, your thinking determines your experience. Second, your thinking can be spiritualized through an understanding of divine metaphysics. Third, this improved thinking must then manifest itself in an improved experience.” Mrs. Beals writes: “Christian Science is so infinite a subject and each person’s needs are so varied that the approach to this work must be individual. Each has his own path to follow and his own spiritual lessons to learn. Yet certain requirements in this work seem to be basically the same for most of us. To pray effectively, the following points need to be considered.” She lists six main points to successful healing prayer, and explains each point in depth Written in a simple style, this analysis of a scientific approach to prayer is practical, and can make the difference between answered and unanswered prayer.

The author explains why obedience to the law of Love is basic to understanding and demonstrating Christian Science. What obstructs the unfoldment of spiritual ideas? What prevents us from gaining a deeper understanding of God and man? Our violation of the law of Love. Many of the most common traits of character that we consider normal are actually forms of sin that violate the law of Love. These mortal elements are listed and defined in this discussion. The Christly qualities that we should express are explained. We achieve this transformation of consciousness through study and prayer, and by living the law of Love. We read in this book that we must reform our heart and soul and mind to obey the law of Love. Ms. Beals writes: “We must work at this until a Christ-like love becomes the natural medium in which we think and live. We must live it in our hearts when we are alone, and in our private lives with those who are close to us, and daily with everyone we come in contact with. There can be no duplicity about this. Spiritual love has to rule from the inmost thoughts to the farthest reaches of our mind.” And she adds, “My friend, it often takes superhuman strength to return love for hate; not to make a reality of the abuse and injustice of animal magnetism; not to react to it; to stand in the face of undeserved coldness, indifference, misunderstanding, personal wrongs, and demonstrate such dominion that we do not react with similar emotions. When we do so, when we return quiet patience, forgiveness, kindness, and understanding to those handled by animal magnetism, we are demonstrating spiritual love.”

Christ Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is within you.” Christian Science leads us into this kingdom within. Through her discovery of Christian Science, Mrs. Eddy was able to make an absolute separation between the real and the unreal, the mortal and the immortal. In so doing, she opened the way for all mankind to find the kingdom of God. But her discovery is so vast a revelation that those who are trying to follow in her footsteps often wonder how to go about achieving this spiritualization of consciousness. In The Secret Place, Ms. Beals asks, “How does one lose himself as matter and gain a spiritual sense of things? How do we convert theory to fact, and exchange faith for understanding? How do we outgrow the old and put on the new? How do we spiritualize consciousness? Actually there is a progressive plan underlying our deliverance from evil.” She then outlines five phases one passes through in moving beyond a mortal sense of life into a rudimentary understanding of God. “Through each phase of our unfoldment, we develop a better rapport with God. As we struggle with the seeming reality of animal magnetism and overcome it, the belief in evil dies out, and so do many false traits — fear, anger, hate, resentment, personal sense, self-will, and jealousy, to name a few. The furnace experience drains us of the heaving sea of mortal emotions, and brings a calmness and peace ‘which passeth all understanding.’ As false emotions disappear, our true selfhood, hidden within, comes forth to fill the void. Spiritual intuitions replace human intellect and reason. When we listen more to God and less to ourselves, we are sensitive to the ‘still, small voice’ of Truth and Love. When we hear this voice, there is a feeling of being at one with God. We move with God’s inner promptings. As we learn to obey these intuitions, we demonstrate all that we do.” This transcript does more than define the difference between mortal mind and immortal Mind. It explains how to go from the material to the spiritual state of mind, and the work involved in achieving this inner transformation. It explains specifically the struggle with evil each one must undertake in order to prove the unreality of animal magnetism and matter, and so gain dominion over them. The reasons for the orderly unfoldment of this plan are given, along with the author’s own experiences in demonstrating each phase.
