She assures us that God never fails us when we turn to Him with absolute confidence that He can do all things for us. Mrs. Rieke illustrates the power in this positive stand for good with a number of outstanding healings, showing that this is a practical approach to the challenges we face. It is the simplicity of this idea and the way it is explained that makes this booklet so inspiring. The booklet gives four reasons as to why we need not be concerned about anything, because God is All-in-all. Thus, spiritual reasoning makes trust in God’s care practical. And further on she states, “We are the children of God, immortal, perfect, abiding forever in God’s heavenly kingdom. From this one and only state of existence, we cannot descend to it, we cannot ascend. We are there now, claiming it, understanding it, and rejoicing in it.”

Christian Science textbook

Science and Health is the foundation to the study of Christian Science. It is known as the Christian Science textbook, containing the complete statement of Mrs. Eddy’s revelation. It brings to light the hidden meaning of the Scriptures and defines the spiritual laws underlying the healing works of Christ Jesus. Mrs. Eddy’s discovery of Christian Science was a great spiritual and scientific breakthrough. She saw through the veil of matter and discerned underlying the universe and man a spiritual cause creating, governing and sustaining reality. She recorded her vision in this textbook and so opened the way for others to understand the nature of this hidden realm.

In Science and Health, she defines God as: “The great I AM; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence.” She explains the allness of God and the unreality of evil and matter, and provides a method of prayer that overcomes the fear of evil and the illusion of matter.

She says, “The admission to one’s self that man is God’s own likeness sets man free to master the infinite idea. This conviction shuts the door on death, and opens it wide towards immortality. The understanding and recognition of Spirit must finally come, and we may as well improve our time in solving the mysteries of being through an apprehension of divine Principle. At present we know not what man is, but we certainly shall know this when man reflects God.”

Final Edition

From the first edition of Science and Health in 1875, until this final volume in 1910, Mrs. Eddy continued to refine her work until she left us a textbook that places spiritual healing on a scientific basis. In these troubled times, many of us are turning to God for help. But the question is, do we find the help we need when we pray? If not, then perhaps we do not know how to pray scientifically. In this age of science and technology, very little is said about the scientific Principle of prayer — prayer based on an understanding of God, rather than blind faith.

If spiritual healing is to be reliable, we must learn to pray intelligently. This booklet outlines how to do this. Included are the three laws basic to spiritual healing. “First, your thinking determines your experience. Second, your thinking can be spiritualized through an understanding of divine metaphysics. To pray effectively, the following points need to be considered.” She lists six main points to successful healing prayer, and explains each point in depth Written in a simple style, this analysis of a scientific approach to prayer is practical, and can make the difference between answered and unanswered prayer.

When Christian Science was first presented to the world, it was greatly misunderstood and attacked by pulpit and press. At that time, spiritual healings were considered miraculous events belonging to the days of early Christianity. This “Introduction” records, “In 1875, the first edition of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, was published. This book was the initial effort of Mary Baker Eddy to put into words her discovery of the spiritual nature of man and the universe. From the very beginning this book had a strange power. It healed those who read it! Students of this book soon found that, as they understood it, they could not only heal themselves, but they could heal others. As Christian Science spread throughout the world, it left in its wake healings equal to those of early Christianity. And so spiritual healing, as practiced by the early Christians, lived again in the hearts of Christian Scientists.”

Although it has been over a century since Science and Health was published, Christian Science is still greatly misunderstood.
