Mary Baker Eddy – Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science
Christian Science first came to light in the Victorian Age. At a time when a materialistic philosophy dominated the scientific world, Mrs. Eddy wrote brilliantly and accurately about the mental and spiritual nature of creation. She succeeded in resolving the age-old conflict between science and religion, defining scientifically the divine Cause of the universe and man.
At the turn of the century, Mrs. Eddy presented concepts that only now are being universally considered. She defined God as the one Cause and Creator, and she revealed the spiritual nature of man and the universe as the effects of one spiritual cause. She declared that there is no matter, and that evil has no power or reality beyond what the human mind gives it. She recognized sickness, disease, and age to be caused by mental and emotional disturbance. She discovered the spiritual and scientific laws underlying Christ Jesus’ healing works and established a form of prayer that put spiritual healing on a scientific basis. She uncovered the lethal effect of malicious mental manipulation and secret hypnosis, and showed how prayer can protect the mind from all forms of thought control. She proved that the power of drugs to heal is only in proportion to one’s faith in them. Because of her extraordinary vision, her writings are especially relevant to the present age.
Her Published and Unpublished Writings
Mrs. Eddy’s writings can be divided into two main categories:
1) Those she published herself; 2) Collections of her personal letters, essays, prayers, students’ notes of her teaching, and other recorded items, classified as her unpublished writings.
Mrs. Eddy’s published writings are the foundation for the study of Christian Science. Her main work, Science and Health, is her complete revelation. It is referred to as the textbook, and remains the most important of all her works.
Mrs. Eddy was a prolific writer. She wrote and published a number of books on her revelation. She also contributed many articles to the periodicals, which she later published as part of Miscellaneous Writings. The amazing thing about her books is that they never run dry. After years of study, you find that with each reading you understand this revelation a little better. Those books published during her life-time are considered her published writings.
Mrs. Eddy also wrote many essays, prayers, letters, sermons and notes to her students. Her students recorded her teaching, saved notes she had written them, and kept diaries of their time with her. These are classified her unpublished writings. After she passed on, many of these writings were collected and published in a number of books by Gilbert Carpenter, Jr. (See The Carpenters) These are considered to be her unpublished writings.
Mrs. Eddy’s unpublished writings are especially helpful in understanding how to relate this very visionary revelation to the human need. Usually the unpublished writings were directed towards overcoming specific problems or answering questions about her teaching. They are on a more personal level. Although her published writings take precedence over all other works on Christian Science, many students consider her unpublished writings essential to their study.
Conclusion
Christian Science is both a religious and scientific discovery designed to lead the world into a new dimension of thought. It accurately defines the nature of the spiritual realm that is emerging through the scientific discoveries of the last century. It is a religious discovery in that it reveals the laws and qualities in this invisible dimension that are the key to Christ Jesus’ healing works. There lies latent in it a healing force that is available to those dedicated to understanding it.
