BIOGRAPHIES AND MEMOIRS OF MARY BAKER EDDY
Christian Science takes on greater meaning when we know about the life of its Discoverer and Founder, and the history of the Church. Biographies and memoirs about Mrs. Eddy assure us as to the spiritual origin of her discovery. The true story of her life reveals a woman so brilliant in spiritual and scientific truth that the world has yet to understand the magnitude of her discovery.
It is sometimes said that Christian Science is a cult, and that Christian Scientists worship Mrs. Eddy. Nothing could be further from the truth. Most Scientists have had many impressive healings in Christian Science. They have found a religion they can believe in. And therefore they have a great love and respect for Mrs. Eddy, but they do not worship her. They worship God.
Through many biographies and memoirs, her life-story is well documented, and tells of her unending struggle to establish a movement built on spiritual healing, not personal adulation. It also tells of the trials and tribulations that she endured in bringing Christian Science to the world. It is the dramatic account of a woman in the eighteen hundreds who overcame every obstacle in establishing her Cause. It is a life filled with tragedy, betrayal, misunderstanding, slander, hostility from pulpit and press, and persecution by disloyal students. And yet in the midst of it all, she wrote: “Love is a mighty spiritual force.”
Her life is inseparable from the history of the Cause she founded. These books and transcripts cover the events leading up to her discovery, and the divine guidance she demonstrated as she established her Cause, organized The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, Massachusetts, and became the Leader of a worldwide movement.
Although the material is mainly about the history of the Cause and its Founder, it also includes many references as to what Mrs. Eddy taught, and how she demonstrated Christian Science in her life. And so these books are important for their metaphysical content as well as their historical information.
